Game-Based Pedagogy in Teacher Education

Project

Using Game-Based Learning (GBL) shows to be an effective way to increase motivation and to improve learning performance in education. Students at the mathematics education master program at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences are in-service teachers who are challenged to use GBL in their work. In order to improve their knowledge and competences in GBL we will develop a course about Game-Based Pedagogy (GBP). GBP is an emergent field in teacher education. The design and implementation of the course will follow a co-creation process involving students, teacher educators and the Smart Education lab for Applied AI.

About the project

Game-Based Pedagogy is a pedagogy grounded on different implementations of various game-based approaches. In education often used game-based approaches include: educational games, entertainment games, learning by making games, and gamification. Each of these approaches has its own particular characteristics and learning potential that teachers need to know in order to implement game-based learning effectively.

The main aim of this project is to develop a course on GBP, which will be done in co-creation within an interdisciplinary team. Other aim of the project is to research students learning with the course.

The expected outcomes of the project are:

  • Improvement of students’ knowledge and competences in GBL and GBP.
  • Course and instructional materials about GBP for mathematics student teachers.
  • Knowledge about GBP for higher education

The course will be implemented with students from the master teaching program for mathematics teachers in the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and it will be available for students of mathematics pedagogics from the teaching education institutes of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam. In adittion, all instructional materials will be available as open digital learning materials and shared inside and outside our institution.
