Lector Interdisciplinaire Zorg voor Chronische GewrichtsaandoeningenMartin van der Esch is lector Interdisciplinaire Zorg voor Chronische Gewrichtsaandoeningen bij de HvA. Daarnaast is hij senior onderzoeker bij Reade, Centrum voor Revalidatie en Reumatologie in Amsterdam, in samenwerking met het Amsterdam UMC, afdeling Revalidatiegeneeskunde. Wetenschappelijk gezien heeft hij ervaring in het uitvoeren van epidemiologische en biomechanische studies.
Het onderzoek van Martin richt zich op conservatieve niet-medicamenteuze behandelingen van musculoskeletale aandoeningen, met name artrose (OA) en reumatoïde artritis (RA), waarbij de nadruk ligt op de rol van knie-instabiliteit in zowel het ontstaan als de voortgang van artrose en de daarmee samenhangende beperkingen in activiteiten. Daarnaast richt hij zich op beweging bij patiënten met reumatoïde artritis die een hoog cardiovasculair risico hebben.
Hij coördineert een cohort van patiënten met knie- en heupartrose bij Reade, is lid van de wetenschappelijke raad van Reade, lid van de ethische commissie van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam en voorzitter van de curriculumprogrammacommissie van de HvA-opleiding Fysiotherapie. Hij begeleidt promovendi op het gebied van reumatologie, revalidatiegeneeskunde, fysiotherapie en bewegingswetenschappen.
